  1. Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

  2. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

  3. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

  4. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

  5. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

  6. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

  7. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

  8. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

  9. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

  10. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

  11. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

  12. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

  13. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

  14. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

  15. The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

  16. And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  17. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

  18. For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

  19. I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

  20. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

  21. Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

  22. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

  23. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

  24. And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,

  25. And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
