  1. Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

  2. ¶ A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

  3. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

  9. I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

  10. Mine age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

  11. I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

  12. For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

  13. The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.

  14. ¶ The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

  15. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

  16. For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land;

  17. They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.

  18. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

  19. And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

  20. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

  21. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

  22. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

  23. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

  24. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

  25. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
