  1. Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

  2. That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

  3. ¶ How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

  4. They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

  5. One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

  6. His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

  7. And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

  8. They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

  9. The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.

  10. Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

  11. The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.

  12. For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.

  13. Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

  14. ¶ A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

  15. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

  16. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

  17. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

  18. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

  19. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

  20. That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

  21. For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

  22. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

  23. Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

  24. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

  25. For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
