  1. And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

  2. And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

  3. Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.

  4. Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

  5. There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

  6. The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

  7. The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.

  8. As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.

  9. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

  10. Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

  11. A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

  12. ¶ For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

  13. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

  14. Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

  15. But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

  16. As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

  17. So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

  18. The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

  19. Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

  20. His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

  21. If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.

  22. I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister.

  23. Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

  24. That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

  25. ¶ How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
