  1. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

  2. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

  3. ¶ And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

  4. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

  5. They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

  6. For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

  7. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.

  8. They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

  9. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

  10. ¶ I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men:

  11. Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this.

  12. For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

  13. O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

  14. How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?

  15. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

  16. And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.

  17. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

  18. Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

  19. And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.

  20. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

  21. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

  22. And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

  23. But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:

  24. Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

  25. And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?
