  1. And one of the same place answered, and said, But who is their father? Therefore it was a prouerbe, Is Saul also among the Prophets?

  2. The Lord be iudge betweene thee and me, and the Lord auenge me of thee, and let not mine hand be vpon thee.

  3. According as the olde prouerbe sayeth, Wickednesse proceedeth from the wicked, but mine hand be not vpon thee.

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dogges head, which against Iudah do shew mercie this day vnto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his neighbours, and haue not deliuered thee into the hande of Dauid, that thou chargest me this day with a fault concerning this woman?

  5. Then shee spake thus, They spake in the olde time, saying, They shoulde aske of Abel. and so haue they continued.

  6. And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth his harneis, boast himselfe, as he that putteth it off.

  7. Certainely as without cause the net is spred before the eyes of all that hath wing:

  8. In those dayes shall they say no more, The fathers haue eaten a sowre grape, and the childrens teeth are set on edge.

  9. Sonne of man, what is that prouerbe that you haue in the land of Israel, saying, The dayes are prolonged and all visions faile?

  10. Tell them therefore, Thus sayeth the Lord God, I wil make this prouerbe to cease, and they shall no more vse it as a prouerbe in Israel: but say vnto them, The daies are at hand and the effect of euery vision.

  11. Beholde, all that vse prouerbes, shall vse this prouerbe against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.

  12. What meane ye that ye speake this prouerbe, concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers haue eaten sowre grapes, and the childrens teeth are set on edge?

  13. As I liue, sayth the Lord God, ye shall vse this prouerbe no more in Israel.

  14. Beholde, all soules are mine, both the soule of the father, and also the soule of the sonne are mine: the soule that sinneth, it shall die.

  15. And there shalbe like people, like Priest: for I wil visite their wayes vpon them, and reward them their deedes.

  16. Either make the tree good, and his fruite good: or els make the tree euill, and his fruite euil: for the tree is knowen by the fruite.

  17. Then he said vnto them, Ye will surely say vnto mee this prouerbe, Physician, heale thy selfe: whatsoeuer we haue heard done in Capernaum, doe it here likewise in thine owne countrey.

  18. For euery tree is knowen by his owne fruite: for neither of thornes gather men figges, nor of bushes gather they grapes.

  19. Salt is good: but if salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it be salted?

  20. Then Nathanael sayde vnto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saide to him, Come, and see.

  21. Be not deceiued: euill speakings corrupt good maners.

  22. Be not deceiued: God is not mocked: for whatsoeuer a man soweth, that shall hee also reape.
