  1. And the children of Israel said: We will go by the beaten way: and if we and our cattle drink of thy waters, we will give thee what is just: there shall be no difficulty in the price, only let us pass speedily.

  2. When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

  8. And you shall destroy every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall cut down every fruitful tree, and shall stop up all the springs of waters, and every goodly field you shall cover with stones.

  9. And they destroyed the cities: And they filled every goodly field, every man casting his stone: and they stopt up all the springs of waters: and cut down all the trees that bore fruit, so that brick walls only remained: and the city was beset by the slingers, and a great part thereof destroyed.

  10. And David longed, and said: O that some man would give me water of the cistern of Bethlehem, which is in the gate.

  11. And these three broke through the midst of the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem, which was in the gate, and brought it to David to drink: and he would not drink of it, but rather offered it to the Lord,

  12. And he built towers in the wilderness, and dug many cisterns, for he had much cattle both in the plains, and in the waste of the desert: he had also vineyards and dressers of vines in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he was a man that loved husbandry.

  13. Wilt thou be angry with us for ever: or wilt thou extend thy wrath from generation to generation?

  14. Drink water out of thy own cistern, and the streams of thy own well:

  15. The mouth of the just is a vein of life: and the mouth of the wicked covereth iniquity.
