  1. And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?

  2. And there came to him the Pharisees and Sadducees tempting: and they asked him to shew them a sign from heaven.

  3. Who said to them: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  4. Why do you not understand that it was not concerning bread I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?

  5. Then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  7. Saying: Master, Moses said: If a man die having no son, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up issue to his brother.

  8. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first having married a wife, died; and not having issue, left his wife to his brother.

  9. In like manner the second and the third and so on, to the seventh.

  10. And last of all the woman died also.

  11. At the resurrection therefore, whose wife of the seven shall she be? For they all had her.

  12. And Jesus answering, said to them: You err, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

  13. For in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married, but shall be as the angels of God in heaven.

  14. And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:

  15. I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.

  16. But the Pharisees, hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together.

  17. Master, Moses wrote unto us that if any man's brother die and leave his wife behind him and leave no children, his brother should take his wife and raise up seed to his brother.

  18. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife and died leaving no issue.

  19. And the second took her and died: and neither did he leave any issue. And the third in like manner.

  20. And the seven all took her in like manner and did not leave issue. Last of all the woman also died.

  21. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise again, whose wife shall she be of them? For the seven had her to wife.

  22. And Jesus answering, saith to them: Do ye not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures nor the power of God?

  23. For when they shall rise again from the dead, they shall neither marry, nor be married, but are as the angels in heaven.

  24. And as concerning the dead that they rise again have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him, saying: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?

  25. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You therefore do greatly err.
