  1. Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us,

  2. According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:

  3. It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

  4. That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.

  5. Writing by their hands: The apostles and ancients, brethren, to the brethren of the Gentiles that are at Antioch and in Syria and Cilicia, greeting.

  6. Forasmuch as we have heard that some going out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, to whom we gave no commandment:

  7. It hath seemed good to us, being assembled together, to choose out men and to send them unto you, with our well beloved Barnabas and Paul:

  8. Men that have given their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  9. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves also will, by word of mouth, tell you the same things.

  10. For it hath seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us to lay no further burden upon you than these necessary things:

  11. That you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication: from which things keeping yourselves, you shall do well. Fare ye well.

  12. The Ancient to the lady Elect and her children, whom I love in the truth: and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth,

  13. For the sake of the truth which dwelleth in us and shall be with us for ever.

  14. Grace be with you, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus the Son of the Father: in truth and charity.

  15. I was exceeding glad that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

  16. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as writing a new commandment to thee, but that which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

  17. And this is charity: That we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that, as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in the same:

  18. For many seducers are gone out into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a seducer and an antichrist.

  19. Look to yourselves, that you lose not the things which you have wrought: but that you may receive a full reward.

  20. Whosoever revolteth and continueth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that continueth in the doctrine, the same hath both the Father and the Son.

  21. If any man come to you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into the house nor say to him: God speed you.

  22. For he that saith unto him: God speed you, communicateth with his wicked works.

  23. Having more things to write unto you, I would not by paper and ink: for I hope that I shall be with you and speak face to face, that your joy may be full.

  24. The children of thy sister Elect salute thee.

  25. The Ancient, to the dearly beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
