  1. Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

  2. even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word,

  3. it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus;

  4. that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed.

  5. and they wrote thus by them, The apostles and the elders, brethren, unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting:

  6. Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls; to whom we gave no commandment;

  7. it seemed good unto us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

  8. men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  9. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves also shall tell you the same things by word of mouth.

  10. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

  11. that ye abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, it shall be well with you. Fare ye well.

  12. The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all they that know the truth;

  13. for the truth’s sake which abideth in us, and it shall be with us for ever:

  14. Grace, mercy, peace shall be with us, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

  15. I rejoice greatly that I have foundcertainof thy children walking in truth, even as we received commandment from the Father.

  16. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote to thee a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

  17. And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye should walk in it.

  18. For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, even they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

  19. Look to yourselves, that ye lose not the things which we have wrought, but that ye receive a full reward.

  20. Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son.

  21. If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into your house, and give him no greeting:

  22. for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works.

  23. Having many things to write unto you, I would not write them with paper and ink: but I hope to come unto you, and to speak face to face, that your joy may be made full.

  24. The children of thine elect sister salute thee.

  25. The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.
