  1. With the merciful, you are merciful; with the champion of purity, you are pure;

  2. When the king of Isra'el saw them, he asked Elisha, "My father, should I attack them? Should I attack them?"

  3. He answered, "Don't attack them! You wouldn't even attack prisoners you had captured with your own sword and bow, would you? So give them food to eat and water to drink, and let them return to their master."

  13. He who despises his fellow sins, but he who shows compassion to the humble is happy.

  14. Won't those who plot evil go astray? But grace and truth are for those who plan good.

  15. The oppressor of the poor insults his maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

  16. Grace and truth preserve a king; with grace he upholds his throne.

  17. He who pursues righteousness and kindness finds life, prosperity and honor.

  18. The righteous person perishes, and nobody gives it a thought. Godly men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous person is taken away from the evil yet to come.

  19. Therefore, your majesty, please take my advice: break with your sins by replacing them with acts of charity, and break with your crimes by showing mercy to the poor; this may extend the time of your prosperity.'

  20. Hear the word of ADONAI, people of Isra'el! For ADONAI has a grievance against the inhabitants of the land: there is no truth, no faithful love or knowledge of God in the land;

  21. Therefore the land mourns, and everyone living there languishes, wild animals too, and the birds in the air; even the fish in the sea are removed.

  22. So you, return to your God; hold fast to grace and justice; and always put your hope in your God.

  23. Human being, you have already been told what is good, what ADONAI demands of you - no more than to act justly, love grace and walk in purity with your God.

  24. "In the past ADONAI-Tzva'ot said, 'Administer true justice. Let everyone show mercy and compassion to his brother.

  25. "How blessed are those who show mercy! for they will be shown mercy.
