  1. People went out to him from Yerushalayim, from all Y'hudah, and from the whole region around the Yarden.

  2. Confessing their sins, they were immersed by him in the Yarden River.

  3. But when Yochanan saw many of the P'rushim and Tz'dukim coming to be immersed by him, he said to them, "You snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming punishment?

  4. If you have really turned from your sins to God, produce fruit that will prove it!

  5. And don't suppose you can comfort yourselves by saying, `Avraham is our father'! For I tell you that God can raise up for Avraham sons from these stones!

  7. It's true that I am immersing you in water so that you might turn from sin to God; but the one coming after me is more powerful than I -- I'm not worthy even to carry his sandals -- and he will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh and in fire.

  8. He has with him his winnowing fork; and he will clear out his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn but burning up the straw with unquenchable fire!"

  9. Then Yeshua came from the Galil to the Yarden to be immersed by Yochanan.

  10. But Yochanan tried to stop him. "You are coming to me? I ought to be immersed by you!"

  11. However, Yeshua answered him, "Let it be this way now, because we should do everything righteousness requires." Then Yochanan let him.

  12. As soon as Yeshua had been immersed, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, he saw the Spirit of God coming down upon him like a dove,

  13. So it was that Yochanan the Immerser appeared in the desert, proclaiming an immersion involving turning to God from sin in order to be forgiven.

  14. People went out to him from all over Y'hudah, as did all the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. Confessing their sins, they were immersed by him in the Yarden River.

  15. I have immersed you in water, but he will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh."

  16. Shortly thereafter, Yeshua came from Natzeret in the Galil and was immersed in the Yarden by Yochanan.

  18. Therefore, Yochanan said to the crowds who came out to be immersed by him, "You snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming punishment?

  19. If you have really turned from your sins, produce fruit that will prove it! And don't start saying to yourselves, `Avraham is our father'! For I tell you that God can raise up for Avraham sons from these stones!

  20. All the people who heard him, even the tax-collectors, by undergoing Yochanan's immersion acknowledged that God was right;

  21. but the P'rushim and the Torah-teachers, by not letting themselves be immersed by him, nullified for themselves God's plan.

  22. They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?”

  23. To them Yochanan replied, “I am immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don’t know.

  24. When Yeshua learned that the P’rushim had heard he was making and immersing more talmidim than Yochanan

  25. (although it was not Yeshua himself who immersed but his talmidim),
