And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall they burn upon thee.
And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him.
And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the favor of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God entreated Jehovah, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place;
Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them also they told unto their father.
And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
And he said unto him, I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee,
but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body.
And, behold, men passed by, and saw the body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake unto him.
And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to mourn, and to bury him.
And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places.
And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

Study Notes for 1 Kings 13
Verse 1
by the word of the LORD — The man of God from Judah is unnamed, and this phrase governs the chapter: it returns in vv.5, 9, 17, 18 and 32. Jeroboam is at the altar himself, burning incense on the feast he had devised (12:33). The altar stood at Bethel, the place Jacob had named 'house of God' (Gen 28:19).
Verse 2
Josiah by name — The cry is addressed to the altar, and it foretells a son of the house of David who would offer 'the priests of the high places' on it. Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign (2 Kings 22:1). He burned men's bones on this altar 'according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed' (2 Kings 23:15–16).
Verse 3
the altar shall be rent — Mopheth, a sign or wonder, given 'the same day' for a word whose fulfilment was far off. Moses gave the test of a prophet in whether 'the thing follow not, nor come to pass' (Deut 18:22). Verse 5 reports it: 'The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given'.
Verse 4
his hand… dried up — Jeroboam 'put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him', and the hand dried up (yabesh) so that he could not pull it in again (shuv, to turn back). It was restored when the man of God besought the LORD, at the king's request, 'Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God' (v.6).
Verse 8
half thine house — The refusal rests on the charge in v.9: 'Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.' Balaam spoke of a reward in the same terms: 'If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD' (Num 24:13).
Verse 11
an old prophet in Bethel — Nabi, prophet. He lived where the altar stood, and his sons told him what the man of God had said to the king. The chapter gives no reason for his seeking him out; it says only that he lied (v.18). He later asks to be buried beside him, and Josiah's men leave that tomb alone (v.31; 2 Kings 23:17–18).
Verse 18
an angel spake unto me — The man of God held a command given directly, 'by the word of the LORD' (v.9), and had repeated it (vv.16–17). Paul sets the same measure against an angel: 'though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed' (Gal 1:8). The verse itself adds, 'But he lied unto him.'
Verse 19
did eat bread in his house — He had said, 'I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee' (v.16), and he went back. No word of the LORD to him had countermanded the command. The next word of the LORD comes to the old prophet (v.20), and it is a sentence on the man he had brought back.
Verse 22
thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers — Nebelah, a carcase. To be laid with one's fathers was the promise to Abraham: 'thou shalt be buried in a good old age' (Gen 15:15). The sentence is exclusion from the family grave. He was buried instead in the old prophet's own grave (v.30).
Verse 24
a lion met him by the way — The lion killed him, yet 'the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase', and v.28 notes that 'the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass'. The old prophet reads it as the LORD's act: 'the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion' (v.26). 20:36 records another man slain by a lion for not obeying the voice of the LORD.
Verse 32
the cities of Samaria — 'Samaria' names the northern kingdom here, though the city of that name was first built later, when Omri bought the hill from Shemer (16:24). The old prophet confirms the cry against the altar, and Josiah did to the high places in 'the cities of Samaria' as he had done in Bethel (2 Kings 23:19).
Verse 33
returned not from his evil way — The verb shuv, to turn back, runs through the chapter: the man of God was told not to 'turn again' (v.9), and the king's hand could not be turned back (v.4). Jeroboam 'returned not' but 'made again' priests of the lowest of the people; 'consecrated' is literally 'filled his hand'. Chronicles adds priests 'for the devils' (2 Chr 11:15).
Verse 34
to cut it off, and to destroy it — The sin of the altars 'became sin unto the house of Jeroboam'. The result is told by Ahijah in 14:10 ('I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam') and carried out in 15:29, when Baasha 'smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed'.
