  1. But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his place of baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

  2. Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.

  3. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

  4. “Watch out!” Jesus told them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  5. They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.”

  6. Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you debating among yourselves about having no bread?

  7. Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

  8. Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

  9. How do you not understand that I was not telling you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  10. Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven used in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  11. That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him.

  12. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.

  13. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.

  14. The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.

  15. And last of all, the woman died.

  16. In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”

  17. Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

  18. In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.

  19. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:

  20. ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

  21. When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

  22. And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.

  23. Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him:

  24. “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.

  25. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
