  1. David answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let him live.’

  8. You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear,

  9. to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more.

  10. But from everlasting to everlasting the loving devotion of the LORD extends to those who fear Him, and His righteousness to their children’s children—

  11. to those who keep His covenant and remember to obey His precepts.

  12. His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

  13. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

  14. Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.

  15. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are children born in one’s youth.

  16. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. He will not be put to shame when he confronts the enemies at the gate.

  17. Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in His ways!

  18. For when you eat the fruit of your labor, blessings and prosperity will be yours.

  19. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine flourishing within your house, your sons like olive shoots sitting around your table.

  20. In this way indeed shall blessing come to the man who fears the LORD.

  21. Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

  22. Strike him with a rod, and you will deliver his soul from Sheol.

  23. You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.

  24. Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities.

  25. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and currents on the dry ground. I will pour out My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.
