  1. And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

  2. But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

  8. Jehovah, thou hast heard the desire of the meek: Thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear;

  9. To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, That man who is of the earth may be terrible no more.

  10. But the lovingkindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, And his righteousness unto children’s children;

  11. To such as keep his covenant, And to those that remember his precepts to do them.

  12. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: The generation of the upright shall be blessed.

  13. Wealth and riches are in his house; And his righteousness endureth for ever.

  14. Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah; Andthe fruit of the womb ishisreward.

  15. As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, So are the children of youth.

  16. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: They shall not be put to shame, When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

  17. Blessed is every one that feareth Jehovah, That walketh in his ways.

  18. For thou shalt eat the labor of thy hands: Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

  19. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine, In the innermost parts of thy house; Thy children like olive plants, Round about thy table.

  20. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed That feareth Jehovah.

  21. Withhold not correction from the child; Forif thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

  22. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

  23. Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil-doers shall not be named for ever.

  24. Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers, that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.

  25. For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
