  1. Will God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him?

  2. This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty:

  3. If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

  4. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death, And his widows shall make no lamentation.

  5. Though he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay;

  6. He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver.

  7. He buildeth his house as the moth, And as a booth which the keeper maketh.

  8. He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered to his fathers; He openeth his eyes, and he is not.

  9. Terrors overtake him like waters; A tempest stealeth him away in the night.

  10. The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; And it sweepeth him out of his place.

  11. ForGodshall hurl at him, and not spare: He would fain flee out of his hand.

  12. Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place.

  13. For God speaketh once, Yea twice, though man regardeth it not.

  14. In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;

  15. Then he openeth the ears of men, And sealeth their instruction,

  16. That he may withdraw man from his purpose, And hide pride from man;

  17. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

  18. He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And with continual strife in his bones;

  19. So that his life abhorreth bread, And his soul dainty food.

  20. His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; And his bones that were not seen stick out.

  21. Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, And his life to the destroyers.

  22. If there be with him an angel, An interpreter, one among a thousand, To show unto man what is right for him;

  23. ThenGodis gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.

  24. His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s; He returneth to the days of his youth.

  25. He prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him, So that he seeth his face with joy: And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.
