  1. but to the lady you shall do nothing. There is in the lady no sin worthy of death; for as when a man rises against his neighbor, and kills him, even so is this matter;

  9. In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.

  10. His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.

  11. Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

  12. His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, retained him; and he stayed with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.

  13. Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’

  14. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

  15. For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’”

  16. However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the LORD’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”

  17. The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye shall see me.’ He disguises his face.

  18. In the dark they dig through houses. They shut themselves up in the daytime. They don’t know the light.

  19. For the morning is to all of them like thick darkness, for they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

  20. “They are foam on the surface of the waters. Their portion is cursed in the earth. They don’t turn into the way of the vineyards.

  21. “I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

  22. “If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

  23. then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.

  24. For that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

  25. For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.
