  1. Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

  2. And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people.   6. And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.

  7. And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.

  8. Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

  9. Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

  10. Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

  11. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

  12. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

  13. And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

  14. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

  15. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

  16. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

  17. Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

  18. They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

  19. He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.

  20. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

  21. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

  22. ¶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

  23. A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

  24. Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

  25. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
