  1. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

  2. They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

  3. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

  4. Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

  5. Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

  8. Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.

  9. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.

  10. So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

  11. Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

  12. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.

  13. Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.

  14. ¶ I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

  15. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

  16. Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

  17. My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

  18. He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

  19. He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

  20. He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

  21. Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

  22. He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

  23. He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

  24. He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.

  25. He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
