  1. At that time the Lord said to me: Hew thee two tables of stone like the former, and come up to me into the mount: and thou shalt make an ark of wood,

  2. And I will write on the tables the words that were in them, which thou brokest before, and thou shalt put them in the ark.

  13. The children of Israel therefore did as Joshua commanded them, carrying out of the channel of the Jordan twelve stones, as the Lord had commanded him according to the number of the children of Israel unto the place wherein they camped, and there they set them.

  14. And Joshua put other twelve stones in the midst of the channel of the Jordan, where the priests stood that carried the ark of the covenant: and they are there until this present day.

  15. And the twelve stones, which they had taken out of the channel of the Jordan, Joshua pitched in Galgal,

  16. And said to the children of Israel: When your children shall ask their fathers tomorrow, and shall say to them: What mean these stones?

  17. You shall teach them, and say: Israel passed over this Jordan through the dry channel,

  18. The Lord your God drying up the waters thereof in your sight, until you passed over:

  19. As he had done before in the Red Sea, which he dried up till we passed through:

  20. And he wrote upon stones, the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, which he had ordered before the children of Israel.

  21. Joshua therefore on that day made a covenant, and set before the people commandments and judgments in Sichem.

  22. And Samuel took a stone, and laid it between Masphath and Sen: and he called the place The stone of help. And he said: Thus far the Lord hath helped us.

  23. And the king commanded that they should bring great stones, costly stones, for the foundation of the temple, and should square them:

  24. And the masons of Solomon, and the masons of Hiram, hewed them: and the Giblians prepared timber and stones to build the house.

  25. And the house, when it was in building, was built of stones, hewed and made ready: so that there was neither hammer nor axe, nor any tool of iron heard in the house when it was in building.
