  1. And the tempter coming said to him: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

  2. Who answered and said: It is written, Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.

  3. Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple,

  4. And said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written: That he hath given his angels charge over thee, and in their hands shall they bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  5. Jesus said to him: It is written again: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

  6. Again the devil took him up into a very high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,

  7. And said to him: All these will I give thee, if falling down thou wilt adore me.

  8. Then Jesus saith to him: Begone, Satan: for it is written: The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and him only shalt thou serve.

  9. Then the devil left him; and behold angels came and ministered to him.

  10. But the Pharisees said, By the prince of devils he casteth out devils.

  11. Or how can any one enter into the house of the strong, and rifle his goods, unless he first bind the strong? and then he will rifle his house.

  12. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, there cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart: this is he that received the seed by the way side.

  13. Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.

  14. And the field is the world. And the good seed are the children of the kingdom. And the cockle are the children of the wicked one.

  15. And the enemy that sowed them, is the devil. But the harvest is the end of the world. And the reapers are the angels.

  16. Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.

  17. And he was in the desert forty days and forty nights, and was tempted by Satan. And he was with beasts: and the angels ministered to him.

  18. And the scribes who were come down from Jerusalem, said: He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of devils he casteth out devils.

  19. And after he had called them together, he said to them in parables: How can Satan cast out Satan?

  20. And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

  21. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

  22. And if Satan be risen up against himself, he is divided, and cannot stand, but hath an end.

  23. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown, and as soon as they have heard, immediately Satan cometh and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

  24. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan and was led the by the spirit into the desert,

  25. For the space of forty days, and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
