  1. Now the serpent was more subtle than any of the beasts of the earth which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman: Why hath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise?

  2. And the serpent said to the woman: No, you shall not die the death.

  3. For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil.

  4. And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed among all cattle, and beasts of the earth: upon thy breast shalt thou go, and earth shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

  5. I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.

  6. But transgressors shall all of them be plucked up as thorns: which are not taken away with hands.

  7. And if a man will touch them, he must be armed with iron and with the staff of a lance: but they shall be set on fire and burnt to nothing.

  8. And Satan rose up against Israel: and moved David to number Israel.

  9. Now on a certain day, when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.

  10. And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.

  11. And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain?

  12. Hast thou not made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth?

  13. But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he bless thee not to thy face.

  14. Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

  15. And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant, Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause.

  16. And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin; and all that a man hath, he will give for his life:

  17. But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt see that he will bless thee to thy face.

  18. And the Lord said to Satan: Behold, he is in thy hand, but yet save his life.

  19. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:

  20. The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?

  21. He shall judge among nations, he shall fill ruins: he shall crush the heads in the land of many.

  22. And the Lord shewed me Jesus the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord: and Satan stood on his right hand to be his adversary.

  23. And the Lord said to Satan: The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan: and the Lord that chose Jerusalem rebuke thee: Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

  24. Then Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil.

  25. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry.
