  1. My son, keep my words, and lay up my precepts with thee. Son,

  2. Keep my commandments, and thou shalt live: and my law as the apple of thy eye:

  3. Bind it upon thy fingers, write it upon the tables of thy heart.

  4. Say to wisdom: Thou art my sister: and call prudence thy friend,

  5. That she may keep thee from the woman that is not thine, and from the stranger who sweeteneth her words.

  6. Let not thy mind be drawn away in her ways: neither be thou deceived with her paths.

  7. For she hath cast down many wounded, and the strongest have been slain by her.

  8. Her house is the way to hell, reaching even to the inner chambers of death.

  9. Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,

  10. But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.

  11. Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.

  12. Meat for the belly and the belly for the meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. But the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord: and the Lord for the body.

  13. Now God hath raised up the Lord and will raise us up also by his power.

  14. Know you not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid!

  15. Or know you not that he who is joined to a harlot is made one body? For they shall be, saith he, two in one flesh.

  16. But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.

  17. Fly fornication. Every sin that a man doth is without the body: but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

  18. Or know you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God: and you are not your own?

  19. Now concerning the things whereof you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

  20. But for fear of fornication, let every man have his own wife: and let every woman have her own husband.

  21. For I would that all men were even as myself. But every one hath his proper gift from God: one after this manner, and another after that.

  22. But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they so continue, even as I.

  23. But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be burnt.

  24. Now, concerning virgins, I have no commandment of the Lord: but I give counsel, as having obtained mercy of the Lord, to be faithful.

  25. I think therefore that this is good for the present necessity: that it is good for a man so to be.
