he said, “I will give you a full hearing after your accusers have also arrived,” and ordered him to be kept under guard in Herod’s headquarters.

Three days after Festus had entered the province, he went up from Caesarea to Yerushalayim.

If I am a wrongdoer, if I have done something for which I deserve to die, then I am ready to die. But if there is nothing to these charges which they are bringing against me, no one can give me to them just to grant a favor! I appeal to the Emperor!”

Then Festus, after talking with his advisers, answered, “You have appealed to the Emperor; you will go to the Emperor!”

My answer to them was that it is not the custom with Romans to give up an accused man just to grant a favor, before he has met his accusers face to face and had the opportunity to defend himself against the charge.

So when they arrived here with me, I did not delay, but took my seat in court the next day and ordered the man brought in.

“When the accusers stood up, instead of charging him with some serious crime as I had expected,

they disputed with him about certain points of their own religion, and particularly about somebody called Yeshua, who had died, but who Sha’ul claimed was alive.

And Agrippa said to Festus, “If he hadn’t appealed to the Emperor, he could have been released.”

Once it had been decided that we should set sail for Italy, they handed Sha’ul and some other prisoners over to an officer of the Emperor’s Regiment named Julius.

And when we arrived at Rome, the officer allowed Sha’ul to stay by himself, though guarded by a soldier.

The night is almost over, the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and arm ourselves with the weapons of light.

For I think God has been placing us emissaries on display at the tail of the parade, like men condemned to die in the public arena: we have become a spectacle before the whole universe, angels as well as men.

Don’t you know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one wins the prize? So then, run to win!

Now every athlete in training submits himself to strict discipline, and he does it just to win a laurel wreath that will soon wither away. But we do it to win a crown that will last forever.

I treat my body hard and make it my slave so that, after proclaiming the Good News to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

If my fighting with “wild beasts” in Ephesus was done merely on a human basis, what do I gain by it? If dead people are not raised, we might as well live by the saying, “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

But thanks be to God, who in the Messiah constantly leads us in a triumphal procession and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of what it means to know him!

For to God we are the aroma of the Messiah, both among those being saved and among those being lost;

to the latter, we are the smell of death leading only to more death; but to the former, we are the sweet smell of life leading to more life. Who is equal to such a task?

and truthfulness of speech; and by God’s power. We commend ourselves through our use of righteous weapons, whether for pressing our cause or defending it;

Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the deceptive tactics of the Adversary.

For we are not struggling against human beings, but against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.

So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing.

Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate,
