  9. An argument arose among the talmidim as to which of them might be the greatest.

  10. But Yeshua, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, took a child, stood him beside himself,

  11. and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the One who sent me. In other words, the one who is least among you all — this is the one who is great.”

  12. He told them, “As you’re going into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters,

  13. and say to its owner, ‘The Rabbi says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I am to eat the Pesach meal with my talmidim?” ’

  14. He will show you a large room upstairs already furnished; make the preparations there.”

  15. They went and found things just as Yeshua had told them they would be, and they prepared for the Seder.

  16. But he did not commit himself to them, for he knew what people are like —

  17. that is, he didn’t need anyone to inform him about a person, because he knew what was in the person’s heart.

  18. He said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.”

  19. She answered, “I don’t have a husband.” Yeshua said to her, “You’re right, you don’t have a husband!

  20. You’ve had five husbands in the past, and you’re not married to the man you’re living with now! You’ve spoken the truth!”

  21. “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet,” the woman replied.

  22. So the woman left her water-jar, went back to the town and said to the people there,

  23. “Come, see a man who told me everything I’ve ever done. Could it be that this is the Messiah?”

  24. Yeshua said to him, “A man who has had a bath doesn’t need to wash, except his feet — his body is already clean. And you people are clean, but not all of you.”

  25. (He knew who was betraying him; this is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”)
