Bible Verses About Self-Righteousness
Key Bible Verses
But if you call yourself a Jew and rest on Torah and boast about God
and know his will and give your approval to what is right, because you have been instructed from the Torah;
and if you have persuaded yourself that you are a guide to the blind, a light in the darkness,
an instructor for the spiritually unaware and a teacher of children, since in the Torah you have the embodiment of knowledge and truth;
For in his sight no one alive will be considered righteous on the ground of legalistic observance of Torah commands, because what Torah really does is show people how sinful they are.
So what room is left for boasting? None at all! What kind of Torah excludes it? One that has to do with legalistic observance of rules? No, rather, a Torah that has to do with trusting.
for, since they are unaware of God’s way of making people righteous and instead seek to set up their own, they have not submitted themselves to God’s way of making people righteous.
So you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”
True, but so what? They were broken off because of their lack of trust. However, you keep your place only because of your trust. So don’t be arrogant; on the contrary, be terrified!
For if God did not spare the natural branches, he certainly won’t spare you!
In our hearts we felt we were under sentence of death. However, this was to get us to rely not on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead!
So, let anyone who wants to boast, boast about Adonai;
because it is not the one who recommends himself who is worthy of approval, but the one whom the Lord recommends.
For if anyone thinks he is something when he is really nothing, he is fooling himself.
But the things that used to be advantages for me, I have, because of the Messiah, come to consider a disadvantage.
Not only that, but I consider everything a disadvantage in comparison with the supreme value of knowing the Messiah Yeshua as my Lord. It was because of him that I gave up everything and regard it all as garbage, in order to gain the Messiah
and be found in union with him, not having any righteousness of my own based on legalism, but having that righteousness which comes through the Messiah’s faithfulness, the righteousness from God based on trust.
Yes, I gave it all up in order to know him, that is, to know the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings as I am being conformed to his death,
For you keep saying, ‘I am rich, I have gotten rich, I don’t need a thing!’ You don’t know that you are the one who is wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked!
My advice to you is to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich; and white clothing, so that you may be dressed and not have to be ashamed of your nakedness; and eyesalve to rub on your eyes, so that you may see.
