  1. And Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites,

  3. the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,

  4. the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans were scattered,

  5. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.

  6. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

  7. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

  8. So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

  9. And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,

  10. After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,

  11. for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.

  12. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.

  13. Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”

  14. When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.

  15. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination or conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery,

  16. casts spells, consults a medium or spiritist, or inquires of the dead.

  17. and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.

  18. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.

  19. When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.

  20. After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, “Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?”

  21. “Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”

  22. Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our allotted territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.

  23. When Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.

  24. And there they found Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking down the Canaanites and Perizzites.

  25. As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
