  1. Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time.

  2. And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

  3. So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”

  7. ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God, or a man more pure than his Maker?

  8. If God puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error,

  9. how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who can be crushed like a moth!

  10. “Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God?

  11. If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.

  12. Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain?

  13. If I should wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lye,

  14. then You would plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would despise me.

  15. What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

  16. If God puts no trust in His holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in His eyes,

  17. how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water?

  18. How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

  19. If even the moon does not shine, and the stars are not pure in His sight,

  20. how much less man, who is but a maggot, and the son of man, who is but a worm!”

  22. The LORD looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if any understand, if any seek God.
