  1. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

  2. that upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

  3. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto.

  4. Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

  5. Now this I say: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise of none effect.

  6. For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise: but God hath granted it to Abraham by promise.

  7. And if ye are Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.

  8. For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

  9. Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

  10. Which things contain an allegory: for these women are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

  11. Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

  12. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

  13. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

  14. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

  15. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted himthat was bornafter the Spirit, so also it is now.

  16. Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

  17. Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

  18. For when God made promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he sware by himself,

  19. saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

  20. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

  21. to whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, King of righteousness, and then also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

  22. without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God), abideth a priest continually.

  23. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the chief spoils.

  24. And they indeed of the sons of Levi that receive the priest’s office have commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though these have come out of the loins of Abraham:

  25. but he whose genealogy is not counted from them hath taken tithes of Abraham, and hath blessed him that hath the promises.
