  1. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  2. But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.

  3. Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;

  4. that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

  5. laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.

  6. But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;

  7. and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away.

  8. For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits.

  9. Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

  10. But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

  11. Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

  12. Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.

  13. Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten.

  14. Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.

  15. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Hosts.

  16. You have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

  17. knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,

  18. For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone,”

  19. But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does the love of God remain in him?

  20. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

  21. The kings of the earth, the princes, the commanding officers, the rich, the strong, and every slave and free person, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains.

  22. They told the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

  23. for the great day of his wrath has come; and who is able to stand?”

  24. saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, she who was dressed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls!

  25. For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.’ Every ship master, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far away,
