  1. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  2. ¶ At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  3. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

  4. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

  5. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  6. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

  7. And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

  8. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

  9. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

  10. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

  11. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

  12. And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

  13. And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

  14. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

  15. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

  16. Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  17. And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

  18. But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

  19. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

  20. And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

  21. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

  22. Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

  23. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

  24. And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

  25. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
