  1. Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

  2. Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

  3. For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:

  4. Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

  5. Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?

  6. ¶ Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

  7. Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

  8. And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.

  9. And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

  10. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

  11. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  12. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

  13. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

  14. For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

  15. And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  16. And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

  17. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

  18. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

  19. ¶ And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

  20. When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

  21. And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

  22. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

  23. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

  24. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

  25. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
