  1. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

  2. Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

  3. ¶ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

  4. For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

  5. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

  6. ¶ But godliness with contentment is great gain.

  7. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

  8. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

  9. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

  10. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

  11. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

  12. Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

  13. Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

  14. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

  15. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

  16. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

  17. Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

  18. Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

  19. But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

  20. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  21. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

  22. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
