  1. And Elias the Thesbite, of the inhabitants of Galaad, said to Achab: As the Lord liveth, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.

  2. But after some time the torrent was dried up: for it had not rained upon the earth.

  3. After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elias, in the third year, saying: Go, and shew thyself to Achab, that I may give rain upon the face of the earth.

  4. And Elias went to shew himself to Achab, and there was a grievous famine in Samaria.

  5. And at the seventh time: Behold a little cloud arose out of the sea like a man's foot. And he said: Go up, and say to Achab: Prepare thy chariot, and go down, lest the rain prevent thee.

  6. And while he turned himself this way and that way, behold the heavens grew dark, with clouds and wind, and there fell a great rain. And Achab getting up, went away to Jezrahel:

  7. If the heavens be shut up, and there fall no rain by reason of the sin of the people, and they shall pray to thee in this place, and confess to thy name, and be converted from their sins, where thou dost afflict them,

  8. Then hear thou from heaven, O Lord, and forgive the sins of thy servants and of thy people Israel and teach them the good way in which they may walk: and give rain to thy land which thou hast given to thy people to possess.

  9. If I shut up heaven, and there fall no rain, or if I give orders, and command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people:

  10. And my people, upon whom my name is called, being converted, shall make supplication to me, and seek out my face, and do penance for their most wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.

  11. Then all the men of Juda, and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within three days, in the ninth month, the twentieth day of the month: and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of the sin, and the rain.

  12. But as the people are many, and it is time of rain, and we are not able to stand without, and it is not a work of one day or two, (for we have exceedingly sinned in this matter,)

  13. Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters:

  14. May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.

  15. When he gave a law for the rain, and a way for the sounding storms.

  16. They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for a latter shower.

  17. Behold, God is great, exceeding our knowledge: the number of his years is inestimable.

  18. He lifteth up the drops of rain, and poureth out showers like floods:

  19. Which flow from the clouds that cover all above.

  20. He commandeth the snow to go down upon the earth, and the winter rain, and the shower of his strength.

  21. By reason of the misery of the needy, and the groans of the poor, now will I arise, saith the Lord. I will set him in safety: I will deal confidently in his regard.

  22. I am become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to the sons of my mother.

  23. Therefore pride hath held them fast: they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness.

  24. And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.

  25. Wilt thou be angry with us for ever: or wilt thou extend thy wrath from generation to generation?
