  1. If thou do well, shalt thou not receive? but if ill, shall not sin forthwith be present at the door? but the lust thereof shall be under thee, and thou shalt have dominion over it.

  2. Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.

  3. And I have regarded my own holy name, which the house of Israel hath profaned among the nations to which they went in.

  4. Therefore thou shalt say to the house of Israel: Thus saith the Lord God: It is not for your sake that I will do this, O house of Israel, but for my holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the nations whither you went.

  5. It is not for your sakes that I will do this, saith the Lord God, be it known to you: be confounded, and ashamed at your own ways, O house of Israel.

  6. Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven.

  7. Therefore when thou dost an alms-deed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

  8. But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth.

  9. That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

  10. And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

  11. But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

  12. And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard.

  13. Be not you therefore like to them for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him.

  14. Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  15. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  16. Give us this day our supersubstantial bread.

  17. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

  18. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.

  19. For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences.

  20. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences.

  21. And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

  22. But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face;

  23. That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee.

  24. Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother's just.
