And the lot for the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families was unto the border of Edom, even to the wilderness of Zin southward, at the uttermost part of the south.
and it went out southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and went up by the south of Kadesh-barnea, and passed along by Hezron, and went up to Addar, and turned about to Karka;
And the east border was the Salt Sea, even unto the end of the Jordan. And the border of the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the end of the Jordan;
and the border went up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is over against the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed along to the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel;
and the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the side of the Jebusite southward (the same is Jerusalem); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the uttermost part of the vale of Rephaim northward;
and the border extended from the top of the mountain unto the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border extended to Baalah (the same is Kiriath-jearim);
and the border turned about from Baalah westward unto mount Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim on the north (the same is Chesalon), and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;
and the border went out unto the side of Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikkeron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out at Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.
And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even Kiriath-arba, which Arba was the father of Anak (the same is Hebron).
And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said, What wouldest thou?
And she said, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
And as for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.

Study Notes for Joshua 15
Verse 1
the lot of the tribe — Goral, a pebble, hence a lot. 'By lot was their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses' (Josh 14:2; Num 26:56). Judah's south line starts at 'the wilderness of Zin' by Edom, as Num 34:3 had fixed it.
Verse 4
the river of Egypt — Nachal, a stream-bed, especially a winter torrent, not the Nile. The line 'fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt' was already set in Num 34:5; it ends 'at the sea', and this is 'your south coast'.
Verse 7
the valley of Achor — Achor means troubled: the place where Achan was stoned and a heap raised over him (Josh 7:24–26). It marks Judah's northern border, and the LORD later promises it as 'a place for the herds to lie down in' (Isa 65:10).
Verse 8
the valley of the son of Hinnom — The border runs 'unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem'. Josh 18:16 gives the same line from Benjamin's side. The valley later held Topheth, defiled by Josiah (2 Kings 23:10). 'Giants' is rapha.
Verse 13
the city of Arba the father of Anak — Caleb's share was assigned 'according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua', fulfilling the word that he would receive the land he had trodden (Deut 1:36). Qiryath Arba means city of Arba; its later name is Hebron.
Verse 14
the three sons of Anak — Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the same three named at Hebron when the spies came there (Num 13:22). Yarash means to dispossess. Judges 1:20 repeats it, 'he expelled thence the three sons of Anak', and Judg 1:10 says Judah slew them.
Verse 17
Othniel the son of Kenaz — Judg 1:13 calls him 'Caleb's younger brother'; Caleb is himself 'the Kenezite' (Josh 14:6). He took the city and won Achsah as promised in v.16. Later 'the LORD raised up a deliverer', Othniel (Judg 3:9), and the land had rest forty years (Judg 3:11).
Verse 19
Give me a blessing — Berakah is used here for a gift. Achsah argues from the dry land she was given: 'a south land' (negeb, the parched south) needs 'springs' (gullah, bowl-like pools). Caleb gives 'the upper springs, and the nether springs'; Judg 1:15 repeats it.
Verse 28
Beersheba — Beer-sheba means well of an oath, named by Abraham 'because there they sware both of them' (Gen 21:31). It stands among the southern cities of Judah (vv.21–32); Josh 19:2 also lists it among Simeon's cities, and 'from Dan even to Beersheba' (Judg 20:1) marks the land's length.
Verse 47
Ashdod… Gaza — Both Philistine cities are written into Judah's lot, with Ekron, 'unto the river of Egypt, and the great sea'. Yet Josh 13:3 names their 'five lords of the Philistines', so the allotment marks the boundary of the grant, not possession at this time.
Verse 49
Kirjathsannah, which is Debir — The same city as 'Kirjathsepher' in vv.15–16, which Othniel took (v.17; Judg 1:11–13). The Strong's gloss renders the names as city of branches, or of a book. It stands among the cities 'in the mountains' (v.48).
Verse 54
Kirjatharba, which is Hebron — Qiryath Arba, city of Arba (vv.13–14; 14:15). It is the Kirjatharba where Sarah died (Gen 23:2). Though Caleb's own portion (v.13), it is still counted here among the nine cities of Judah's mountain group.
Verse 63
could not drive them out — The verb is yarash, the one used of Caleb in v.14: he 'drove' the sons of Anak, but Judah 'could not drive' the Jebusites. Judges 1:21 says the same of Benjamin. 'Unto this day' stood until David took the stronghold (2 Sam 5:6–9).
