  1. But the tenants seized his servants. They beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.

  2. Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group. But the tenants did the same to them.

  3. Finally, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

  4. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance.’

  5. So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

  6. Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do to those tenants?”

  7. “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and will rent out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his share of the fruit at harvest time.”

  8. Then He proceeded to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it out to some tenants, and went away for a long time.

  9. At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed.

  10. So he sent another servant, but they beat him and treated him shamefully, sending him away empty-handed.

  11. Then he sent a third, but they wounded him and threw him out.

  12. ‘What shall I do?’ asked the owner of the vineyard. ‘I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’

  13. But when the tenants saw the son, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’

  14. So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

  15. He will come and kill those tenants, and will give the vineyard to others.” And when the people heard this, they said, “May such a thing never happen!”

  16. Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.

  17. With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

  18. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land?

  19. Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”

  20. On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard what had happened.

  21. Then the young men stepped forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

  22. About three hours later his wife also came in, unaware of what had happened.

  23. “Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.”
