  1. hath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?

  2. And if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,

  3. and that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call--us--

  4. not only out of Jews, but also out of nations,

  5. as also in Hosea He saith, `I will call what is not My people--My people; and her not beloved--Beloved,

  6. and it shall be--in the place where it was said to them, Ye are not My people; there they shall be called sons of the living God.'

  7. And Isaiah doth cry concerning Israel, `If the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;

  8. for a matter He is finishing, and is cutting short in righteousness, because a matter cut short will the Lord do upon the land.

  9. and according as Isaiah saith before, `Except the Lord of Sabaoth did leave to us a seed, as Sodom we had become, and as Gomorrah we had been made like.'

  10. What, then, shall we say? that nations who are not pursuing righteousness did attain to righteousness, and righteousness that is of faith,

  11. and Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, at a law of righteousness did not arrive;

  12. wherefore? because--not by faith, but as by works of law; for they did stumble at the stone of stumbling,

  13. according as it hath been written, `Lo, I place in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence; and every one who is believing thereon shall not be ashamed.'

  14. So then also in the present time a remnant according to the choice of grace there hath been;

  15. What then? What Israel doth seek after, this it did not obtain, and the chosen did obtain, and the rest were hardened,

  16. according as it hath been written, `God gave to them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear,' --unto this very day,

  17. for see your calling, brethren, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;

  18. but the foolish things of the world did God choose, that the wise He may put to shame; and the weak things of the world did God choose that He may put to shame the strong;

  19. and the base things of the world, and the things despised did God choose, and the things that are not, that the things that are He may make useless--

  20. that no flesh may glory before Him;

  21. but we speak the hidden wisdom of God in a secret, that God foreordained before the ages to our glory,

  22. and when God was well pleased--having separated me from the womb of my mother, and having called me through His grace--

  23. according as He did choose us in him before the foundation of the world, for our being holy and unblemished before Him, in love,

  24. having foreordained us to the adoption of sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

  25. having made known to us the secret of His will, according to His good pleasure, that He purposed in Himself,
