  1. Behold, that which I have seen to be good and proper is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor, in which he labors under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion.

  2. Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.

  3. For he shall not often reflect on the days of his life; because God occupies him with the joy of his heart.

  4. There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:

  5. a man to whom God gives riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him no power to eat of it, but an alien eats it. This is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

  6. Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.

  7. For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

  8. A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes the life glad; and money is the answer for all things.

  9. Woe to those who join house to house, who lay field to field, until there is no room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

  10. Thus says the LORD, Don’t let the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, don’t let the rich man glory in his riches;

  11. As the partridge that sits on eggs which she has not laid, so is he who gets riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.

  12. Therefore my heart sounds for Moab like pipes, and my heart sounds like pipes for the men of Kir Heres: therefore the abundance that he has gotten is perished.

  13. Why do you glory in the valleys, your flowing valley, backsliding daughter? who trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come to me?

  14. by your wisdom and by your understanding you have gotten yourself riches, and have gotten gold and silver into your treasures;

  15. by your great wisdom and by your traffic you have increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches—

  16. They shall bring you down to the pit; and you shall die the death of those who are slain, in the heart of the seas.

  17. Ephraim said, “Surely I have become rich, I have found myself wealth. In all my wealth they won’t find in me any iniquity that is sin.”

  18. They covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

  19. Therefore thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am planning against these people a disaster, from which you will not remove your necks, neither will you walk haughtily; for it is an evil time.

  20. Her rich men are full of violence, her inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their speech.

  21. Won’t all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion! How long?’

  22. Won’t your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim?

  23. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it.

  24. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

  25. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says the LORD of Hosts.
