  1. Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

  2. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.

  3. Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.

  4. Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

  5. ¶ And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.

  6. Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

  7. And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:

  8. If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house:

  9. Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

  10. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

  11. ¶ He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.

  12. And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

  13. And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

  14. And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.

  15. And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.

  16. So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:

  17. And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.

  18. And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

  19. Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

  20. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

  21. ¶ Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

  22. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

  23. Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

  24. And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

  25. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
