  1. And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.

  2. And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

  3. Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.

  4. But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.

  5. He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

  6. Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:

  7. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

  8. Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

  9. Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.

  10. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

  11. And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

  12. ¶ How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.

  13. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

  14. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

  15. And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

  16. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,

  17. And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

  18. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

  19. But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

  20. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

  21. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.

  22. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

  23. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

  24. ¶ Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

  25. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
