  1. And he shall giue Israel vp, because of the sinnes of Ieroboam, who did sinne, and made Israel to sinne.

  2. And walked according to the facions of the Heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel, and after the maners of the Kings of Israel, which they vsed,

  3. And the children of Israel had done secretly things that were not vpright before the Lord their God, and throughout all their cities had built hie places, both from the tower of the watch, to the defensed citie,

  4. And had made them images and groues vpon euery hie hill, and vnder euery greene tree,

  5. And there burnt incense in all the hie places, as did the heathen, whom the Lord had taken away before them, and wrought wicked things to anger the Lord,

  6. And serued idoles: whereof the Lord had sayd vnto them, Ye shall do no such thing,

  7. Yet Iudah kept not the commandements of the Lord their God, but walked according to the facion of Israel, which they vsed.

  8. Then the princes of Israel, and the King humbled themselues, and sayde, The Lord is iust.

  9. And when the Lord sawe that they humbled themselues, the worde of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, They haue humbled theselues, therefore I will not destroy them, but I will sende them deliuerance shortly, and my wrath shall not bee powred out vpon Ierusalem by the hand of Shishak.

  10. Moreouer hee made hie places in the mountaines of Iudah, and caused the inhabitants of Ierusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Iudah thereto.

  11. And there came a writing to him from Elijah the Prophet, saying, Thus sayth the Lord God of Dauid thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the wayes of Iehoshaphat thy father, nor in the wayes of Asa King of Iudah,

  12. But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Iudah and the inhabitantes of Ierusalem to go a whoring, as the house of Ahab went a whoring, and hast also slaine thy brethre of thy fathers house, which were better then thou,

  13. But when they had rest, they returned to doe euill before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hande of their enemies, so that they had the dominion ouer them, yet when they conuerted and cryed vnto thee, thou heardest them from heauen, and deliueredst them according to thy great mercies many times,

  14. And shed innocent blood, euen the blood of their sonnes, and of their daughters, whome they offred vnto the idoles of Canaan, and the lande was defiled with blood.

  15. Many a time did hee deliuer them, but they prouoked him by their counsels: therefore they were brought downe by their iniquitie.

  16. Yet hee sawe when they were in affliction, and he heard their crie.

  17. And he remembred his couenant towarde them and repented according to the multitude of his mercies,

  18. And gaue them fauour in the sight of all them that lead them captiues.

  19. Mine eyes gush out with riuers of water, because they keepe not thy Lawe.

  20. Iustice exalteth a nation, but sinne is a shame to the people.

  21. Of a prince that hearkeneth to lyes, all his seruants are wicked.

  22. Heare, O heauens, and hearken, O earth: for the Lord hath sayde, I haue nourished and brought vp children, but they haue rebelled against me.

  23. The oxe knoweth his owner, and the asse his masters crib: but Israel hath not knowen: my people hath not vnderstand.

  24. Ah, sinfull nation, a people laden with iniquitie: a seede of the wicked, corrupt children: they haue forsaken the Lord: they haue prouoked the holy one of Israel to anger: they are gone backewarde.

  25. Wherefore shoulde ye be smitten any more? for ye fall away more and more: the whole head is sicke, and the whole heart is heauie.
