  1. And many of them that believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds

  2. Testifying both to Jews and Gentiles penance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  3. But to them first that are at Damascus and at Jerusalem, and unto all the country of Judea, and to the Gentiles did I preach, that they should do penance and turn to God, doing works worthy of penance.

  9. Now I am glad: not because you were made sorrowful, but because you were made sorrowful unto penance. For you were made sorrowful according to God, that you might suffer damage by us in nothing.

  10. For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

  11. For behold this selfsame thing, that you were made sorrowful according to God, how great carefulness it worketh in you: yea defence, yea indignation, yea fear, yea desire, yea zeal, yea revenge. In all things you have shewed yourselves to be undefiled in the matter.

  12. But they had heard only: He, who persecuted us in times past doth now preach the faith which once he impugned.

  13. Wherefore he saith: Rise, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead: and Christ shall enlighten thee.

  14. Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth.

  15. For they themselves relate of us, what manner of entering in we had unto you: and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.

  16. With modesty admonishing them that resist the truth: if peradventure God may give them repentance to know the truth;

  17. Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith: To-day if you shall hear his voice,

  18. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the desert,

  19. Again he limiteth a certain day, saying in David; To day, after so long a time as it is above said: To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

  20. Wherefore, leaving the word of the beginning of Christ, let us go on to things more perfect: not laying again the foundation of penance from dead works and of faith towards God,

  21. For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, have tasted also the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

  22. Have moreover tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come,

  23. And are fallen away: to be renewed again to penance, crucifying again to themselves the Son of God and making him a mockery.

  24. And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us:

  25. Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who, having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sitteth on the right hand of the throne of God.
