For as much therefore as these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rashly.

For you have brought hither these men, who are neither guilty of sacrilege nor of blasphemy against your goddess.

But if Demetrius and the craftsmen that are with him have a matter against any man, the courts of justice are open: and there are proconsuls. Let them accuse one another.

And if you inquire after any other matter, it may be decided in a lawful assembly.

For we are even in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no man guilty (of whom we may give account) of this concourse. And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose.

Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour.

I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men:

For kings and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity.

Be ye subject therefore to every human creature for God's sake: whether it be to the king as excelling,

Or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of the good.

For so is the will of God, that by doing well you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

As free and not as making liberty a cloak for malice, but as the servants of God.
