And it came to pass, in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in Jordan.
And forthwith coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens open and the Spirit as a dove descending and remaining on him.
He said therefore to the multitudes that went forth to be baptized by him: Ye offspring of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance: and do not begin to say, We have Abraham for our father. For I say unto you that God is able of these stones, to raise up children to Abraham.
And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John's baptism.
But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him.
And they asked him and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?
John answered them, saying: I baptize with water: but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.
And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism.
Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance saying: That they should believe in him, who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.
