  1. And they shall answer: Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and followed strange gods, and adored them, and worshipped them: therefore hath the Lord brought upon them all this evil.

  2. And he went out to meet Asa, and said to him: Hear ye me, Asa, and all Juda and Benjamin: The Lord is with you, because you have been with him. If you seek him, you shall find: but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

  3. And many days shall pass in Israel, without the true God, and without a priest a teacher, and without the law.

  4. And when in their distress they shall return to the Lord the God of Israel, and shall seek him, they shall find him.

  5. He hath struck them, as being wicked, in open sight.

  6. Who as it were on purpose have revolted from him, and would not understand all his ways:

  7. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

  8. Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

  9. Thou therefore, O son of man, say to the children of thy people: The justice of the just shall not deliver him, in what day soever he shall sin: and the wickedness of the wicked shall not hurt him, in what day soever he shall turn from his wickedness: and the just shall not be able to live in his justice, in what day soever he shall sin.

  10. Yea, if I shall say to the just that he shall surely live, and he, trusting in his justice, commit iniquity: all his justices shall be forgotten, and his iniquity, which he hath committed, in the same shall he die.

  11. And my people shall long for my return: but a yoke shall be put upon them together, which shall not be taken off.

  12. How shall I deal with thee, O Ephraim, shall I protect thee, O Israel? how shall I make thee as Adama, shall I set thee as Seboim? my heart is turned within me, my repentance is stirred up.

  13. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown, and as soon as they have heard, immediately Satan cometh and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

  14. And these likewise are they that are sown on the stony ground: who when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with joy.

  15. And they have no root in themselves, but are only for a time: and then when tribulation and persecution ariseth for the word they are presently scandalized.

  16. And others there are who are sown among thorns: these are they that hear the word,

  17. And the cares of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts after other things entering in choke the word, and it is made fruitless.

  18. When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth.

  19. But if a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted and will distribute his spoils.

  20. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

  21. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out.

  22. And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.

  23. Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

  24. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud: and all passed through the sea.

  25. And all in Moses were baptized, in the cloud and in the sea:
