  1. and they shall answer, ‘Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold of other gods, and worshiped them, and served them. Therefore the LORD has brought all this evil on them.’”

  2. and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin! the LORD is with you, while you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

  3. Now for a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.

  4. But when in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them.

  5. He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

  6. because they turned aside from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,

  7. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god;

  8. won’t God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

  9. You, son of man, tell the children of your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his disobedience; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he who is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins.

  10. When I tell the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his righteousness, and commit iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in his iniquity that he has committed, therein shall he die.

  11. My people are determined to turn from me. Though they call to the Most High, he certainly won’t exalt them.

  12. “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me, my compassion is aroused.

  13. The ones by the road are the ones where the word is sown; and when they have heard, immediately Satan comes, and takes away the word which has been sown in them.

  14. These in the same way are those who are sown on the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with joy.

  15. They have no root in themselves, but are short-lived. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.

  16. Others are those who are sown among the thorns. These are those who have heard the word,

  17. and the cares of this age, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

  18. “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.

  19. But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted, and divides his plunder.

  20. “He that is not with me is against me. He who doesn’t gather with me scatters.

  21. The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest, and finding none, he says, ‘I will turn back to my house from which I came out.’

  22. When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order.

  23. Then he goes, and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”

  24. Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

  25. and were all immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
