  1. "If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;

  2. then let my wife grind for another man, and let others kneel on her.

  3. For that would be a heinous act, a criminal offense,

  4. a fire that would burn to the depths of Abaddon, uprooting all I produce.

  5. They keep you from an evil woman, from a loose woman's seductive tongue.

  6. Don't let your heart lust after her beauty or allow her glance to captivate you.

  7. Now these things took place as prefigurative historical events, warning us not to set our hearts on evil things as they did.

  8. Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were — as the Tanakh puts it, “The people sat down to eat and drink, then got up to indulge in revelry.”

  9. For the time is coming when people will not have patience for sound teaching, but will cater to their passions and gather around themselves teachers who say whatever their ears itch to hear.

  10. Yes, they will stop listening to the truth, but will turn aside to follow myths.

  11. Rather, each person is being tempted whenever he is being dragged off and enticed by the bait of his own desire.

  12. Then, having conceived, the desire gives birth to sin; and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.

  13. What is causing all the quarrels and fights among you? Isn’t it your desires battling inside you?

  14. You desire things and don’t have them. You kill, and you are jealous, and you still can’t get them. So you fight and quarrel. The reason you don’t have is that you don’t pray!

  15. Or you pray and don’t receive, because you pray with the wrong motive, that of wanting to indulge your own desires.

  16. because all the things of the world — the desires of the old nature, the desires of the eyes, and the pretensions of life — are not from the Father but from the world.

  17. And the world is passing away, along with its desires. But whoever does God’s will remains forever.
