  1. Then, on the day ADONAI handed over the Emori to the people of Isra'el, Y'hoshua spoke to ADONA I; in the sight of Isra'el he said, "Sun, stand motionless over Giv'on! Moon, you too, over Ayalon Valley!"

  2. So the sun stood still and the moon stayed put, till Isra'el took vengeance on their enemies.

  3. This is written in the book of Yashar. The sun stood still in the sky and was in no rush to set for nearly a whole day. There has never been a day like that before or since, when ADONAI listened to the voice of a man; it happened because ADONAI was fighting on Isra'el's behalf.

  4. He shakes the earth from its place; its supporting pillars tremble.

  5. He commands the sun, and it fails to rise; he shuts up the stars under his seal.

  6. He alone spreads out the sky and walks on the waves in the sea.

  7. He made the Great Bear, Orion, the Pleiades and the hidden constellations of the south.

  8. "Can you tie up the cords of the Pleiades or loosen the belt of Orion?

  9. Can you lead out the constellations of the zodiac in their season or guide the Great Bear and its cubs?

  10. Do you know the laws of the sky? Can you determine how they affect the earth?

  11. For the leader. A psalm of David: The heavens declare the glory of God, the dome of the sky speaks the work of his hands.

  12. Every day it utters speech, every night it reveals knowledge.

  13. Without speech, without a word, without their voices being heard,

  14. their line goes out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. In them he places a tent for the sun,

  15. which comes out like a bridegroom from the bridal chamber, with delight like an athlete to run his race.

  16. It rises at one side of the sky, circles around to the other side, and nothing escapes its heat.

  17. to him who skillfully made the heavens, for his grace continues forever;

  18. to him who spread out the earth on the water, for his grace continues forever;

  19. to him who made the great lights, for his grace continues forever;

  20. the sun to rule the day, for his grace continues forever;

  21. the moon and stars to rule the night, for his grace continues forever;

  22. This is what ADONAI says, who gives the sun as light for the day, who ordained the laws for the moon and stars to provide light for the night, who stirs up the sea until its waves rorar -- ADONAI-Tzva'ot is his name:

  23. "If these laws leave my presence," says ADONAI, "then the offspring of Isra'el will stop being a nation in my presence forever."

  24. This is what ADONAI says: "If the sky above can be measured and the foundations of the earth be fathomed, then I will reject all the offspring of Isra'el for all that they have done," says ADONAI.

  25. When I extinguish you, I will cover the sky and make its stars black; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.
